Willock reveals why he made the switch to Tyneside

Joe Willock last week made the switch from Arsenal to Newcastle United after his successful loan spell on Tyneside last season. The deal was thought to be in the region of 25 million pounds, and followed weeks of speculation over his future.

Now, speaking to BBC Newcastle, the English midfielder has revealed why he made the switch, and when he will be ready to play.

Willock explained:

“Coming back to Newcastle was always at the top of my list so when I decided to leave Arsenal, there was only one place I was going to go and that’s Newcastle.

“I didn’t really have a lot of games in pre-season, I only played 30 to 40 minutes in pre-season. I feel like, for me, I want to put the shirt back on and give my all for Newcastle United.

“Whether it’s this weekend or the following week, I feel like there will be a time where I need to step up and go on the pitch. I’d like to play this weekend so hopefully, I’ll get my opportunity whether it’s from the bench or the start.”

With so little pre-season time under his belt, it will be touch and go as to whether Willock can make the starting line up for the weekend’s clash with Aston Villa.

Sean Longstaff price set

Meanwhile, Newcastle have set their valuation on supposed Everton target Sean Longstaff. As per the Daily Mail, the Magpies are looking for a fee of around 10 million pounds to part with their out of favour player this summer.

WIth just 12 months left to run on his Tyneside deal, however, it would likely be possible to negotiate this fee to something much more reasonable, with Steve Bruce desperate for cash to rejuvenate his side.

It remains to be seen if a deal, and much needed injection of funds, can be arranged.

Bruce hints at future transfer plans

So far, Joe Willock has been Newcastle’s only major signing this summer. With this in mind, Bruce was asked after defeat to West Ham whether more business would be done, and his answer seemed to suggest that if more players are to arrive, it will almost certainly be on loan.

When questioned, Bruce revealed:

“I have always said that when you are in the loan market, then you have got to be patient, because you’ve got to wait.

“We have been patient with Joe [Willock] so look, let’s see what becomes available.

Of course, for Newcastle fans this will come as a major blow, but one that was surely not unexpected given the ownership of the club.
