Newcastle confirm €50m midfielder deal before turning attentions towards Aston Villa in left-back hunt

Newcastle United have set their sights on Premier League rivals Aston Villa amid a late push to secure fresh blood at left-back ahead of Monday’s winter transfer deadline.

The Claret and Blue star being eyed? Matt Targett.

As per a report from reliable outlet The Athletic, Eddie Howe is keen to bolster the options on the left of his backline over the coming 24 hours, as the Magpies eye a great escape from the relegation scrap over the 2nd half of the campaign.

Targett, in turn, is ‘expected’ to be subject to mounting interest on the part of those in a position of power at St. James’ Park, with a deal for the 26-year-old, whilst unlikely, not out of the question.

This of course comes with Villa having already secured left-back reinforcements of their own this month, in the form of Lucas Digne’s arrival from Everton.

Guimaraes secured

Whilst one somewhat under-the-radar addition is tipped for St. James’ Park ahead of tomorrow’s fast-approaching transfer deadline, another more headline-grabbing one, moments ago, was made official.

In a series of posts across the club’s social media platforms, Newcastle have confirmed that Bruno Guimaraes, as expected, has put pen to paper on a deal on Tyneside.

As per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the transfer, including bonuses, could ultimately set the Magpies back a whopping €50.1 million.

Brazilian international Guimaraes himself, meanwhile, has agreed to the terms of a contract through the summer of 2026.
