Newcastle confirm 4th January addition, as Man United’s Jesse Lingard stance revealed

A pair of updates surrounding the endeavours of newly-minted Newcastle United to add to the club’s ranks ahead of tonight’s transfer deadline have come to the fore.

The first comes in the form of yet another confirmed addition to Eddie Howe’s squad.

The player to have followed all of Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes to Tyneside ahead of an intended push up the Premier League table over the coming weeks and months? Matt Targett.

It had of course long been common knowledge that the Magpies were on the lookout for fresh blood at left-back this month, amid the struggles of both Jamal Lewis and Matt Ritchie.

In turn, after Aston Villa sealed an impressive deal for Lucas Digne, the transfer chiefs on the Toon quickly set their sights on the out-of-favour Targett, who has linked up with the club on loan for the remainder of the term:

Targett’s arrival is expected to be followed by yet another addition to Howe’s ranks at St. James’ Park over the coming hours, too, with Brighton’s Dan Burn primed to add some long overdue Premier League-proven experience to the heart of Newcastle’s squad.

Lingard off the table

On a less positive note for the Newcastle hierarchy and fanbase alike, however, one key target who looks set to miss out on a deadline day transfer comes in the form of Jesse Lingard.

On the back of an underwhelming opening half to the campaign back at Old Trafford, Lingard was widely expected to seek out a Manchester United exit this month, amid hopes of a call-up to England’s World Cup squad late in the year.

Newcastle, in turn, made their interest clear, joining David Moyes’ West Ham in the hunt for the goalscoring midfield talent.

As confirmed by a host of reliable sources late on Monday evening, however, despite his backup status in Manchester, Lingard will not be allowed to move on ahead of the January window slamming shut:
