Newcastle and Tottenham handed boost as Stefan De Vrij contract stance revealed

Tottenham and Newcastle seek defensive reinforcements

While the two Premier League sides are in widely different positions in the top flight, they have the same problems.

A lack of quality at centre-back.

In Newcastle’s case, a takeover in October has set expectations of January arrivals, and the quality of said arrivals, at an all-time high. Links with the likes of Jesse Lingard and a new striker are all well and good, the magpies sit in the relegation zone largely due to their leaky defence, having conceded 30 goals so far this season, the third-most in the division.

Clearly then, they need some added strength in defence.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have lost Cristian Romero for the foreseeable future, who was their major summer acquisition at the heart of their backline. With Joe Rodon keen on a move away, it leaves just Eric Dier, Japhet Tanganga and Davinson Sanchez as recognised central defenders, although Ben Davies has been deployed there this season.

So, what about Stefan De Vrij?

De Vrij contract situation outlined

Now, as per Italian outlet Gazzetta Della sport, the Inter Milan defender’s contract situation has been revealed, and it is good news for both sides.

De Vrij joined Inter three years ago on a free transfer from fellow Serie A outfit Lazio, and has impressed on his 139 outings for the Italian side, helping them secure the Serie A title last season.

However, as per the Gazzetta:

Stefan is the only one of the holders of the last championship who has not yet had an approach with the club for a possible renewal, given the contract expiring in the 2023. Club and player are in no hurry, but by the end of the season it will be necessary to clarify.

This opens the door for a potential move away from the San Siro come January or the summer, and with a big offer, the Italian side could be keen to cash in.
