Netflix has announced that the upcoming Hindi-language comedy-drama darlings will be released directly to the streaming platform, skipping the theatrical route. The platform shared the news with a fun video in which people associated with the feature are seen dodging questions about its release plans. The video not only piques the curiosity of fans but also introduces us to the cast of Darlings which is headlined by Alia Bhatt, Vijay Varma, Shefali Shah and Roshan Mathew. However, it doesn’t confirm an exact release date, suggesting that Netflix hasn’t finalized one yet.

Bhatt said in a prepared statement: “darlings holds a very special place in my heart, it’s my first film as a producer also with Red Chillies. We are very proud and happy with how the film has come together and hope it entertains and engages audiences around the world.”

Located in a conservative lower middle class neighborhood, darlings It is said to revolve around how the protagonist and her mother find the courage to face extraordinarily difficult circumstances.

darlings is directed by Jasmeet K. Reen and marks her directorial debut. Gauri Khan, Bhatt and Gaurav Verma produced the film under the Red Chillies Entertainment and Eternal Sunshine Production banners. Red Chillies Entertainment has already produced films such as the reincarnation drama Om Shanti Omthe fantasy film Paheli, the mystery thriller Badla and the mystery thriller Bob Biswas. Eternal Sunshine Productions, meanwhile, was created by Bhatt and darlings is his first production company.

It will, interestingly, be Bhatt’s second major film to be released straight to digital streaming platforms after 2020’s action drama Sadak 2. The Mahesh Bhatt-directed film, a sequel to the 1991 release Sadak, was premiered on Disney+ Hotstar to negative reviews. Darlings comes at a time when the Student of the Year actress is going through a good phase on the work front, as she was last seen in Telugu-language period drama RRR, which reported nearly Rs. 1,200 crore worldwide to become a blockbuster. It will be worth watching if darlings turns out to be a memorable outing for her.

darlings will drop later this year on Netflix but its release date has yet to be announced.
