Nemanja Matic outlines what Manchester United’s target for 2021/22 needs to be
Man United’s 2020/21
Manchester United’s 2020/21 season would ultimately end in disappointing fashion.
After failing to make it out of their Champions League group, the Red Devils went all the way to the Europa League final, before losing out to Villarreal.
United also failed to win either the FA Cup or League Cup, leaving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer without any silverware to show for two and a half seasons in charge of the club.
The Manchester giants did manage to finish 2nd in the Premier League table, but they did not exactly pose a title challenge, 12 points off eventual champions Man City.
United, though, have since strengthened their squad in some key positions this summer.
For some time now, the Reds have lacked an elite right-winger, but that issue has been solved by the arrival of Jadon Sancho.
The Manchester outfit also desperately needed to upgrade on Victor Lindelof, which they have done by signing Raphael Varane.
They have also managed to keep hold of Edinson Cavani for another campaign, and if he can start this season like he finished the last, United should have a seriously impressive no.9 on their books – something they lacked somewhat in the first half of 2020/21 when Anthony Martial was misfiring and Cavani was struggling for fitness.
Matic on what Man United’s target should be
Man United will kick off their 2021/22 season this coming Saturday.
The Red Devils will play host to bitter rivals Leeds United in the day’s early kick-off.
Ahead of their season getting underway, Nemanja Matic has outlined what Man United’s target for 2021/22 should be.
And, with Matic of the opinion that United have two or three top-class players in every position now, he believes that the Manchester outfit’s target for the season needs to be a trophy:
“As you know, we didn’t win the Europa League at the end, but I think we made a step forward and the team is improving.
“This season we have to challenge for every trophy and finally to win something, because we need that one trophy. After that we hope it will be easier, the team needs to feel that [winning] energy and I’m happy how everything has been going.
“The most important thing is everyone can see that we are improving and that we play better and better, and especially now we have such a good squad. In every position we have two or three top-class players. Everyone needs to be positive and the target for us this season needs to be a trophy.”
