The latest edition of Spanish football’s marquee fixture of course played out a short time ago.

Ronald Koeman’s Barca welcomed arch rivals Real to the Camp Nou, for a highly-anticipated first Clasico showdown of the campaign.

When all was said and done in Catalunya, however, Koeman and co. were simply reminded of how far adrift of the game’s elite they truly are at present.

In the club’s first meeting with Real Madrid in the post-Lionel Messi era, they majorly struggled to carve out clear-cut opportunities, with a late Sergio Aguero consolation just about the only reason for the home fans to get excited all afternoon.

For the visiting Blancos, on the other hand, strikes on the part of David Alaba and Lucas Vazquez ensured that Carlo Ancelotti’s men returned to the Spanish capital with another three points in the bag:

De Jong targeted

In turn, on the back of another hugely disappointing afternoon amid a season to forget to date, it should come as little surprise to hear that the Barcelona fans have since been up in arms.

Whilst a whole host of Ronald Koeman’s stars struggled to make an impact versus Real, though, one has since been singled out for particularly heavy criticism.

The player in question? Frenkie de Jong.

Midfielder de Jong of course boasts all of the attributes of a world-class performer in the middle of the park.

On Sunday, however, the Dutchman was simply outperformed in every manner imaginable by the likes of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.

In turn, the Blaugrana faithful, and neutral viewers alike, have not been shy in taking aim at the Dutchman, amid widespread concerns over de Jong’s penchant for going missing when he is needed the most:
