Microsoft boosts OpenAI with multi-billion dollar investment

Microsoft announced on Monday that it has extended its partnership with OpenAI, the startup behind ChatGPT and Slab. He said in a blog post that this marked the start of the third phase of a multi-billion dollar, multi-year investment.

“In this next phase of our partnership, developers and organizations across all industries will have access to the best AI infrastructure, models, and toolchain with Azure to build and run their applications,” said writes Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella.

Microsoft said it would increase investment in developing and deploying supercomputing systems to support OpenAI research. Microsoft also said it will deploy OpenAI’s models in its consumer and enterprise products.

“We are excited to continue our independent research and work to create advanced AI that benefits everyone,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said, according to Microsoft.

OpenAI wrote in a separate blog post on Monday that despite this investment, it will remain a limited profit company. Microsoft’s investment “will allow us to continue our independent research and develop increasingly safe, useful and powerful AI,” OpenAI wrote.

Microsoft and OpenAI partnership started in 2016 when OpenAI agreed to use Azure from Microsoft cloud computing software to run his artificial intelligence experiments. Then in 2019 Microsoft has invested $1 billion in OpenAI to jointly develop new supercomputing technology.
