Michael Carrick explains decision to drop Cristiano Ronaldo for Chelsea clash

Manchester United interim boss Michael Carrick has provided an insight into his shock decision to drop Cristiano Ronaldo to the bench for the club’s meeting with Chelsea.

Blues test

The Red Devils are of course set to return to action in short order.

On the back of a morale-boosting 2-0 downing of Villarreal in the Champions League in midweek, Carrick and co. have made the daunting trip to Stamford Bridge, for a Premier League showdown with table-topping Chelsea.

United head into proceedings in the knowledge that, despite being heavy underdogs, they cannot really afford to slip to another defeat on Sunday.

This comes with the Manchester giants having plummeted to the depths of mid-table in the English top-flight over recent weeks, owing to a stretch of four defeats in the club’s last five league outings.

‘Freshen things up’

In turn, it came as nothing short of a shock when, upon the visitors’ starting XI for this evening’s action being unveiled, the club’s star performer was nowhere to be seen.

The player in question? Cristiano Ronaldo.

After netting yet another crucial goal in midweek, the Portuguese will be forced to make do with a spot on the bench from the off at Stamford Bridge, with Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford preferred to lead the line for United:

Ahead of kick-off in west London, it therefore came as little surprise when Michael Carrick, overseeing his 2nd outing as interim Red Devils boss this evening, was drawn on his decision to leave Ronaldo out.

And the English tactician went on to confirm that the call was made simply in an effort to ‘freshen things up’, with CR7 having been ‘great’ in his reaction to the news:
