Messi begins press conference in tears as he bids Barcelona farewell

Lionel Messi bombshell

On Thursday, Barcelona announced the news that Lionel Messi would no longer be on their books, shocking the footballing world in the process.

The Argentine had been a free agent since 1st July, but there was confidence that a deal could be done to keep him at the Camp Nou.

However, this proved not to be the case, and the Spanish club released a statement confirming that Messi will be leaving the club.

Messi holds press conference

Denied of a farewell on the pitch at the Camp Nou, Messi held a press conference instead, where he spoke to the media and his teammates.

In a clear demonstration of his love for the club and the eleventh hour decision that was made on his future, the Argentine forward emerged on stage in tears.

Speaking about his career and his future, Messi confirmed that a deal was ready and La Liga pulled the plug, saying:

“My family and I were convinced that we were going to stay here”

Clearly, despite links to PSG, he is yet to truly sever ties with the Blaugrana, continuing:

“this is really difficult for me after so many years”

“I’m not ready for this”

In a short but emotive speech, Messi thanked the fans and his teammates, while thousands of adoring Barca fans stood outside the Camp Nou in vigil.
