MediaTek to Unveil Satellite Connectivity on Android Phones at MWC 2023 and Demonstrate Dimensity 9200 SoC

MediaTek has announced that it will present a host of demos of the innovations and developments undertaken by the chipset maker during Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023 which is due to begin in Barcelona, ​​Spain on February 27, 2023. The demonstrations will include the MediaTek’s take on enabling satellite connectivity on Android smartphones, thanks to 3GPP Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) support in its chips. The company also announced plans to launch 5G support for New Radio NTN (NR-NTN) soon. The development comes after rival companies also released similar plans, with Qualcomm announcing Snapdragon Satellite, while Samsung also launched its vision for the technology for its Exynos chipsets.

Satellite Communication Technology, or 3GPP Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) support in the chipsets, will enable two-way satellite communication directly from an Android smartphone. This could come in handy in an emergency or in places where traditional networks tend to suffer from low or no connectivity. MediaTek intends to launch the technology on smartphones, however, the company has also made its intention to extend this technology to other platforms like cars in the near future.

MediaTek has also confirmed that Bullit will be the first brand to offer the company’s satellite connectivity hardware. Bullit will launch the technology on its CAT S75 smartphone as well as the Motorola Defy 2 smartphone, MediaTek mentioned in a press release. The CAT S75 model smartphone is currently available for pre-order, while the Motorola Defy 2 smartphone is expected to launch in the second quarter of 2023.

MediaTek has also confirmed that it will provide satellite connectivity through an accessory called Motorola Defy Satellite Link. The accessory will essentially use Bluetooth to allow smartphone users to connect to satellites using the Bullitt Satellite Connect platform. Once connected, users will be able to send and receive messages, share their location and send emergency SOS relays.

The chipmaker, in cooperation with Ericsson, will also demonstrate its 5G mmWave beam technology that will improve connection performance and reliability. MediaTek’s demos at MWC 2023 are also expected to be headlined by its Dimensity 9200 chipset, which will be showcased on the Vivo X90 and Vivo X90 Pro. Some of the features of the latest flagship chipset include real-time refresh rate adjustment via Intelligent Display Sync 3.0, image quality optimization with multi-person segmentation, and multi-layer color management via semantic segmentation. smart picture.
