‘Maybe’ – The latest on the chances of Billy Gilmour securing a January return to Chelsea

A fresh insight into the chances of Chelsea talent Billy Gilmour being recalled early from his loan stint with Norwich City has been provided on Friday.

Canaries stint

Scottish international Gilmour of course sealed a departure from Stamford Bridge earlier this summer.

After being deemed surplus to requirements for the season to come owing to Saul Niguez’s talents being added to a midfield core of N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, the 20-year-old was farmed out on loan to Norwich City.

Gilmour’s Carrow Road switch came amid the assumption that the youngster would quickly secure for himself a regular place at the heart of the Canaries’ midfield, to add considerably to a haul of just 11 Premier League appearances.

And, to his credit, this has since proven precisely the case.

Gilmour was afforded starts in four of Norwich’s first five league outings, earning rave reviews for a string of standout displays at the heart of then boss Daniel Farke’s midfield.

And despite a dip in playing time from late September carrying through to November, the midfield dynamo has since returned to prominence in East Anglia once more of late, to make it, all told, starts in 12 of Norwich’s 19 Premier League fixtures this term.

‘Maybe we need to…’

Could such a crucial step in Gilmour’s development as a player, though, yet be brought to a premature end?

The possibility certainly can’t be ruled out, if the latest comments on the part of Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel are anything to go by.

Personnel woes have of course proven headline news at Stamford Bridge of late, as Tuchel’s European champions continue to be ravaged by a combination of injuries and Covid-19 cases.

In turn, the Chelsea boss, earlier today, was drawn on the possibility of cutting Gilmour’s loan with Norwich short, to bring the Scot back to the club in January, as emergency cover in the middle of the park.

And Tuchel point blank refused to shut down the prospect, albeit whilst admitting that, to this point, discussions surrounding such a move have not yet taken place with the hierarchy at Carrow Road:
