Manchester United risk making Mauricio Pochettino-style mistake with Antonio Conte

Solskjaer saving his job

Another season, another crisis at Manchester United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been in the Old Trafford dugout for nearly three years now, yet there have been very few improvements.

Jose Mourinho, widely regarded as a failure during his time in Manchester, still remains the manager with the highest Premier League points total – 81 in 2017/18 – since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club.

The Portuguese also won two trophies, the League Cup and Europa League, whilst Louis van Gaal guided Man United to an FA Cup.

Solskjaer, meanwhile, has not won a single trophy and is yet to match Mourinho’s points total record.

And, much like we saw during October, Ole is simply not good enough to take Manchester United were they need to be.

It was reported after the 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Liverpool that Solskjaer had three games to save his job and, with a 3-0 win over Tottenham having since been secured, the Norwegian appears to be safe for now.

However, there is a very strong case to be made that, regardless of results, Man United need to part with Solskjaer as soon as possible.

This is now the 2nd or 3rd time that Ole has had his back against the wall after a string of very poor results, yet he always does just enough to keep his post.

Man United, though, should not be looking to settle for this and, with three years of Solskjaer yet to wield a single trophy or any form of actual title challenge, it is obvious that he is not good enough.

One manager who likely would have been good enough, however, was Mauricio Pochettino.

The Argentine was sacked by Tottenham on the 19th of November 2019 and was not named as PSG boss until January of 2021.

That left the South American available for Man United to sign for over a year, yet they persisted with the mediocre Solskjaer despite being linked with Pochettino.

Now, amid United’s latest crisis, they once again look set for a similar issue with Antonio Conte.

After losing 5-0 to Liverpool, talk of Antonio Conte taking over at Old Trafford began to seriously ramp up.

However, instead of pulling the trigger on Solskjaer last week and going all-in for Conte, United gave Ole more time and now look as though they will miss out on the Italian.

This is because Tottenham, who were beaten by Man United on Saturday evening, have already sacked their manager on Monday and are now eyeing a move for Conte.

So, despite experiencing their crisis before Spurs, Man United look set to miss out on Conte, who is a world-class manager and has already proven himself in the Premier League, all because they insist on giving an average manager more time to prove himself before inevitably experiencing another crisis in a few months and failing to win anything once again.
