Manchester United ready to agree new contract for key performer

Manchester United are ready to offer David De Gea a new contract, after a string of brilliant performances have kept his side in the race for European football.

The Spaniard returned to the side last season following a spell on the sidelines, and has been in inspired form, being named the Red Devils player of the month for November, December and January.

And while it is a damning indictment of United that their goalkeeper has been named club player of the month for three consecutive months (and Premier League player of the month for January), De Gea is shining.

As per FBref, he has saved his side over 9 goals this season with his performances, almost three more than Jose Sa has managed for Wolves, and six ahead of Alisson who occupies third place for Liverpool.

And now, as per the Sun, the club are preparing to offer him a new contract as a reward for his performances.

Well, sort of. The report claims that ‘the club plans to trigger a 12-month option extending the Spanish keeper’s contract to June 2024, buying time to thrash out fresh terms.’

Sensible business from United amid the chaos

As 101 covered on Saturday, it could be a very tumultuous summer in Manchester come the end of the season, with plenty of players due to depart and more still that could sever ties with the club. Not to mention, the need for a new manager remains, and nothing can really be achieved until then.

However, tying down the future of De Gea, especially with the potential departure of Dean Henderson in the summer, is some rare sensible business from the Red Devils.
