Manchester United on red alert as Barcelona starlet the latest to turn down a new contract
Manchester United and their hierarchy have been put on red alert by recent developments in Catalonia once more.
This comes as Ronald Araujo has rejected an opening contract offer from Barcelona, with Chelsea also interested in the impressive defender.
Araujo has been in fine form despite Barcelona’s struggles, performing well in his 16 La Liga outings to date
As per Spanish outlet MARCA:
‘the offer put forward by the Blaugrana was swiftly turned down, although discussions were amicable and they are expected to return to the negotiating table at a later date’.
This means that Araujo has become the second player to turn down a contract extension, following the announcement that Ousmane Dembele is set to leave the club before the end of the January transfer window.
Ousmane Dembélé agent Sissoko: “Barça are losing Dembélé on their own. They cannot use the threat that Dembélé will spend six months without playing if he does not renew now”, he told RMC. 🇫🇷 #FCB

What’s the situation?
Araujo is not quite in the same boat as Dembele, with 18 months left on his contract as opposed to the six left on Dembele’s. However, any fee that Barcelona wish to receive for their defender will need to be made in the summer should a renewal not be agreed.
This leaves both Chelsea and Manchester United in the game, with the Blues in desperate need of defensive reinforcements should Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen depart the club in the summer as expected.
Manchester United, meanwhile, need to find a reliable partner for Raphael Varane.
A shot at a cut-price Araujo would make a lot of sense.
