Manchester United handed worrying Pogba update as Lionel Messi nears PSG

Lionel Messi on the verge of joining PSG

It has been hard to avoid the news this week that Lionel Messi will not be playing football for Barcelona in the future. The Argentine, who had been a free agent since July 1st, was expected to sign a new deal to keep him at the Camp Nou for the forseeable future, but instead a statement was released explaining that this couldn’t happen for financial reasons.

While several destinations for the footballing wizard were mooted, Manchester City ruled themselves out of the equation and interest from Chelsea has, publicly at least, not been forthcoming.

This has left Paris Saint Germain as the only logical destination, and transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that a two year deal with the French club is imminent.

Manchester United handed Paul Pogba blow

The move for Lionel Messi, which involves a 25 million pound sign-on fee and a salary of 25 million pounds per year has clearly set PSG back significantly.

As a result, The Athletic report that they will no longer look to make a move for Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba this summer, despite previously showing interest.

Rather, they are set to ask the Frenchman to run down his contract, which has just 12 months left on it, and join the Paris side on a free transfer next summer.

This comes as a blow for the Red Devils who, although they will have 12 months more of Pogba in their midfield ranks, now risk not getting a fee for their record signing.
