Manchester United confirm that Cristiano Ronaldo will not play against Liverpool following bereavement

Manchester United have confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo will play no part in their trip to Anfield to take on Liverpool on Tuesday evening as he continues to deal with a family bereavement.

The footballing icon announced over the Easter Weekend that he and his partner had tragically lost one of their newborn children, taking to Instagram to announce the awful news.

”It is with the deepest sadness we have to announce that our baby boy has passed away,” Ronaldo’s statement begins. ”It is the greatest pain that any parents can feel. Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness.”

”We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all their expert care and support. We are all devastated at this loss and we kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time.

”Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you.”

Ronaldo to play no part in Liverpool clash

And understandably, the Portuguese star will not be involved in his side’s upcoming game against Liverpool as a result of the bereavement, with the club confirming the news in a statement.

‘Family is more important than everything and Ronaldo is supporting his loved ones at this immensely difficult time. As such, we can confirm that he will not feature in the match against Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday evening and we underline the family’s request for privacy‘, they announced on their website.

He joins a growing list of absentees for the game against the title-chasing Reds, with Luke Shaw, Raphael Varane, Scott McTominay and Fred all also out, while Edinson Cavani remains sidelined too, leaving Marcus Rashford as the only recognised striker in the squad.

The thoughts of everyone at 101 are with the Ronaldo family.
