Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick reveals the one thing England star needs to improve in order to nail down first-team spot

Manchester United’s English core

Manchester United have, historically, always taken pride in having a good crop of British players, whether it be the likes of Denis Law, George Best, Paul Scholes or Rio Ferdinand.

That is no different now.

Currently, the club have 6 British players in their starting XI (Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Scott McTominay), and several more knocking on the door of the starting XI (Mason Greenwood, Dean Henderson and Jesse Lingard).

With more academy graduates continuing to come off the Manchester United academy’s seemingly endless conveyer belt, it would appear that they are in no danger of running out anytime soon.

But will they all make it to the first team?

Rangnick outlines where Greenwood needs to improve to start every week

One player who certainly took his opportunity to shine yesterday was Mason Greenwood, who has become renowned for the quality of his finishing during his 18 months with the Manchester United first team.

Greenwood netted his side’s only goal in their 1-1 draw with Young Boys in the final Champions League group game, and Ralf Rangnick was quizzed on the ability of the starlet afterwards.

And the new boss was full of praise for the young Englishman, saying:

“He [Greenwood] showed, not only with the beautiful goal, also the way that he set up an opportunity for Juan Mata, that he is a massive talent. That was brilliant.”

“Right foot, left foot, good on the ball, also the way he [Greenwood] set up the goal for Fred on Sunday. But still it is about continuity. He has to develop physically.”

However, he pointed to one thing that needed to improve to take Greenwood to the next level, claiming:

“Technically, for his [Greenwood] age, he is a great player and my job is to develop him and make an athlete out of him and, if he manages to do that, he can become a regular player for this club.”

“Sometimes, he [Greenwood] looks a little bit not on an athletic level and we have to develop him physically. But technically, all the other things he can do with a ball is outstanding.”

Rangnick concluded:

“I am not so much worried about his technical level but we need develop him mentally and physically for him to become the strongest version of himself.”

Is Mason Greenwood the next superstar lying in wait? Manchester United fans certainly think so, judging by their comments last night.
