Manchester United boss Ralf Rangick issues pair of striker updates amid potential January moves

Cavani set to stay

In a blow to Barcelona, Edinson Cavani will not be allowed to leave Old Trafford in the January transfer window, according to the Telegraph.

The Blaugrana were thought to be interested in making a move for the Urugauyan in this transfer window as they look for cost-effective additions to their side, with Cavani for his part also keen on a move to Catalonia.

However, Mike McGrath reports:

Cavani has been linked with a mid-season move to Barcelona but Rangnick has held numerous discussions with the Uruguay striker and made it clear that he is too important to lose. Ideally the Manchester United manager would like another striker in the 34-year-old’s mould.

Speaking ahead of the clash with Wolves, Rangnick revealed:

“I told him [Cavani] from the very first day that, for me, he is a highly important player. He is probably the only one who can play as a striker back to goal and face to goal.

“His professionalism, his work ethic is just amazing and I told him that I desperately want him to stay until the end of the season.

Martial free to leave

The same cannot be said for Anthony Martial, who has already seen one bid for him rejected by the Red Devils amid Sevilla interest.

The Frenchman has been dropped while he seeks a departure from the club, with Rangnick revealing:

“He made it very clear that he wants to leave and, in a way, I can understand his wish to leave and to try to play more regularly somewhere else,”

“But it’s a question not only of what he wants to do but a question of which kind of clubs are interested in him and do they meet the demands of the club, so we have to wait and see.

“He is not injured currently so I decided to go for this group of players that were in the squad today, so it had nothing to do with injuries.”

Should he depart, it seems unlikely that the Red Devils will seek a replacement until the summer transfer window, even more so given Cavani’s stay at the club, alongside Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood who can both partner Cristiano Ronaldo if needed.
