Manchester United boss Michael Carrick hits back at Cristiano Ronaldo “myth” ahead of Arsenal clash

Manchester United: Better without Ronaldo?

There is no doubt that Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the greatest goalscorers of all time, but Manchester United’s woes this season have in some corners been blamed on the Portuguese striker.

Signed in the summer, he has single-handedly rescued Manchester United in Champions League games, where they would otherwise be bottom of the group.

In the Premier League, however, their performance against Chelsea was perhaps their most cohesive outing, with Ronaldo playing a part only from the bench.

Amid rumours that Ronaldo will be a casualty of high-pressing incoming boss Ralph Rangnick, Michael Carrick was asked on the prospect, and claimed:

“Maybe it is a myth. He’s played in enough teams over the years being successful to play in a variety of ways + kept scoring goals for every team. I’m sure he will continue to score goals.”

Sulking on the bench?

Meanwhile, Carrick revealed the response Ronaldo had to being benched at the weekend against Chelsea, saying:

“You can ask Cristiano — the way he responded was perfection really. Around the dressing room he was incredible, he supported the players.

“I went in to do my half-time team talk and he was warming up 10 minutes in advance ready to come on in the second half. I think a lot can be made of it and spinning it in a negative way but behind the scenes and the reality is very different.”

Will Ronaldo be handed a start against Arsenal this evening, or will Carrick continue with the side that battled manfully for a point against Chelsea?
