Manchester City star signs new 5 year contract with the Citizens

Manchester City star defender Joao Cancelo has penned a new contract with the Citizens, keeping him at the club until 2027.

It represents a 2-year extension on his current deal, which was due to run until 2025, and caps a brilliant season for the Portuguese defender thus far.

Speaking to the official Manchester City website, Cancelo spoke of his happiness to have signed an extension, and claimed it was the best

“Manchester City is a fantastic club, so I am incredibly happy to have signed this new agreement,” he said.

“City players have everything they need to reach their full potential, with amazing facilities, world-class teammates and an incredible manager who pushes us every single day.

“There is nowhere better to play football and it’s a pleasure to work here.

“I have so much I want to achieve before my career ends, and Manchester City offers me the best chance of fulfilling my ambitions.

“This new contract means I now have complete focus on improving my game and winning more trophies with this team.”

How good has he been?

Joao Cancelo has been in irresistible form this campaign, scoring three goals and providing 8 assists across all competitions to date for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Ostensibly a right-back, the Portuguese defender has been covering at left-back to great effect this season, and has often found himself popping up all over the pitch and facilitating Manchester City’s attacks no matter where he is initially stationed.

Should he keep his performances up, he should prove a shoo-in for the Premier League Team of the Season, and will be right up there for individual awards too.
