Manchester City earmark former Arsenal legend as potential Pep Guardiola replacement

Manchester City earmark former Arsenal legend as potential Pep Guardiola replacement

Patrick Vieira takes Crystal Palace reigns

Crystal Palace symbolised their change of ideology and regeneration of the squad with the appointment of Patrick Vieira, formally the manager of Nice, and of course, one-time Arsenal invincible.

Vieira’s arrival coincided with a clear plan to sign younger players, with Marc Guehi, Michael Olise, Joachim Andersen and Odsonne Edouard all arriving in South London over the summer, while older players were let go.

There are shoots of progression too. While Crystal Palace have only won one of their opening nine games, they have drawn six, two of which (Arsenal and Brighton) saw them concede stoppage time equalisers. Can they hold their nerve in the dying embers of games, they could quickly shoot up the table.

With Pep Guardiola’s future up in the air, could Vieira take the City hotseat?

The “ambition” is for him to manage Manchester City

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Brian Marwood, who is the current managing director of global football for the City group, alluded to the possibility of Vieira managing the Citizens in the future, revealing he had been earmarked for the role previously.

Marwood said:

“This is a great next step for him and who knows? Only time will tell but when we started the journey with him the ambition was for him hopefully to be still with the group and maybe he would manage Man City one day. We just don’t know but going to Crystal Palace is a great opportunity for him.

“I have more faith in him than maybe he has in himself but I have massive faith in him. I’ve worked with him, I know how good a coach he is, I know the person. I believe that he has the characteristics other than experience to become a top, top manager and that experience he will learn and develop and I’m sure at some point in his career that really big opportunity will happen.”

Should Vieira impress at Palace, could he be a surprise replacement for Pep Guardiola?
