Man United miss out on Camavinga despite heavy interest due to “dream” to play for Real Madrid

No contest between Man United & Real Madrid for Camavinga

There are not many clubs in world football that can gazump Manchester United when they come calling for a player; Real Madrid is one of them. For Eduardo Camavinga, it was a simple decision for the French international to jet-set off to the Spanish capital to begin a new chapter in a young career saddled with immense expectations.

The Stade Rennais youth academy product and youngest ever professional in Les Rouge et Noir history, Camavinga rose through the collective consciousness both at home and abroad over the last two seasons in Brittany where – despite his age – he was already seen as a vital piece for the Roazhon Park outfit.

Eighty-eight combined appearances later after three full seasons at the club, the 18-year-old midfield prodigy netted a high profile move to Madrid while simultaneously rejecting the chance to ply his trade at the Theatre of Dreams, much to the frustration of many in the United camp.

When speaking in the wake of his official unveiling, Camavinga spoke warmly in his adoration of the club and desire to “defend” the badge with all that he has;

“Hello everyone, I’m very happy and pride to be here and to defend this badge. If someone told me a few years ago that I would be here, I would not believe it. I don’t care about the money from other clubs, I care about fulfilling my dream. I didn’t think about it when Madrid called.

The moment I knew I was going to play for Real Madrid, I felt very happy, I was thinking about my family and the problems we had, I am proud to be surrounded by family. Having to escape from the war was able to help me, make me stronger, but above all, my family helpe me a lot when I play, playing for them makes me stronger.”

Despite considerable interest from United, the Red Devils never made an official move for the player given his well-documented interest in a move to Madrid.

French starlet speaks on history past and present; a great learning environment

The chance to play for Real Madrid does not come around often, so for Eduardo Camavinga, that easy decision is likely one any of us would make unless we had a deeply-rooted connection to a different club.

But the chance to walk in the footsteps of former and current idols, while learning from world-class players around him, was an opportunity he jumped at with both hands;

“The first thing you learned about Real Madrid as a kid? Champions League, Zidane, and all the players who have gone through the history of this club. Benzema is an idol for all young French players.

Competition? It motivates me. I want to learn from them. It’s true that I’m a young player, but I have to adapt, and I’m ready for that. My best position? I like to play in front of defense, but I can play in attacking roles, so I have to adapt to whatever style the coach wants, I will play wherever he wants. Like I said before, I’m here to learn, I have to show the coach that I’m ready, I work hard to try and enjoy playing.”

And perhaps there is no better midfield triumvirate to learn from than Luka Modrić, Toni Kroos, and Casemiro. The dynamic trio has so often been the life-blood of Real Madrid in recent years, helping the club to considerable success in both La Liga and in the Champions League.

All three players remain first-choice under Carlo Ancelotti at current, which is the perfect environment for a maturation period for Camavinga that would be invaluable, to say the least.

Should he continue his progression on and off the pitch in Madrid, Camavinga would be another in a very long line of French youngsters to quickly rise to prominence not just on the European, but a global one as well.
