Malang Sarr amongst transfer-linked Chelsea trio handed squad numbers after being named on CL list

A trio of somewhat surprising names have been included on the Champions League squad list submitted by Premier League giants Chelsea on Friday.

Blues clearout

It of course proved an altogether busy summer in the west of London.

On the back of a heavy recruitment drive over the last twelve months, Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea squad was left bloated with fringe options, the vast majority of whom were unlikely to carve out any real playing time over the course of the season ahead.

In turn, it was left to Marina Granovskaia and co. to seek homes for a whole host of out-of-favour players.

And, to the credit of the long-heralded transfer team at Stamford Bridge, this is precisely what they went on to do.

Considerable fees were secured for all of Kurt Zouma, Davide Zappacosta, Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori, whilst Olivier Giroud and Victor Moses were both moved on on a permanent basis, too.

The Pensioners outflux did not end there, though.

No fewer than ten players were also farmed out on loan, as the panel of players at the disposal of boss Tuchel, upon the window slamming shut earlier this week, was finally trimmed to a reasonable number.

Sarr amongst those included

Not all, however, managed to secure much-needed departures.

The most notable were Ross Barkley and Malang Sarr, the latter of whom saw a loan switch to Bundesliga outfit Greuther Furth collapse at the last minute.

But, as outlined above, if the latest activity on the part of the club is anything to go by, then it appears that Chelsea are ready to do their utmost to make the club’s fringe stars feel part of the project in West London.

As confirmed on Friday evening, both Barkley and Sarr, along with youth product Lewis Baker (who could yet seal a return to Turkey this weekend), having been named in the club’s Champions League squad list for the season ahead.

In turn, the trio have also been afforded jersey numbers, with Barkley the new no.18, and Sarr handed 31.
