Liverpool turn down loan bid for Nat Phillips as two clubs circle

Liverpool have turned down a bid from Newcastle for their out-of-favour defender Nat Phillips.

The newly-rich Tyneside outfit submitted a loan offer with an obligation to buy in the summer earlier in the transfer window, but that was rebuffed by Jurgen Klopp and co. as they look to avoid selling on the cheap despite his fringe player status in the Liverpool squad.

And it is thought that two Premier League clubs continue to circle, one of which is likely to be Newcastle as they turn up the heat on their hunt for a centre-back.

As per the Independent:

‘The club will not sell Phillips on the cheap but, with the players in front of him and the interest being expressed, it is understood it is increasingly likely he will move before Monday’s deadline.’

West Ham and Newcastle are both in need of a new centre-back, but whether they will be able to stump up the cash to prize him out of Anfield is another matter.

Who else have Newcastle targetted?

Newcastle have been desperate for a defender all January, and have seen high-profile moves for Sven Botman and Diego Carlos fall through.

And on Wednesday, they also saw an approach for Brighton’s Dan Burn turned down, although they could well go back in for the tall Englishman.
