Liverpool midfielder Thiago linked in swap-deal with AC Milan involving Franck Kessié

Potential Thiago-Kessie swap deal in January window

In a surprising link, Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcântara could be on his way to AC Milan in a January swap deal that would see Ivorian international Franck Kessié head the other direction to Merseyside.

Now 30, the former Bayern Munich and Barcelona key central figure has not had the overall impact at Liverpool that was seen from him while in Bavaria or Catalonia, but despite his overall underwhelming contributions since his move to the club last summer, Thiago is still viewed as an exceptionally talented footballer irrespective of him only registering a single goal in his thirty-two combined appearances for Liverpool since his arrival.

Franck Kessié is out of contract after the current season in Milan and the club hierarchy including Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara are aiming to get some sort of return for the Ivorian in January, rather than losing the former Atalanta man on a free in the summer.

Kessié has rejected the latest contract offer from Milan and is said to be ‘listening’ to advances from French giants Paris Saint-Germain. The link to Thiago perhaps comes as no surprise given how his adaptation to life in the Premier League has taken longer than perhaps many expected.

Questionable start to the season for Liverpool maestro

Despite being included in Luis Enrique’s Spain team at Euro 2020, Thiago only managed a total of 64-minutes of action during La Roja‘s run to the semi-finals where they lost 5-3 on penalties to eventual champions Italy while not making a single starting appearance.

He did not feature at all – not even on the bench – when Liverpool saw off Norwich in the opening weekend this season and has only managed 25-minutes of action total against both Burnley and Chelsea.

Thiago tipped as centrepiece in Liverpool-AC Milan midfield swap deal

At the moment, Liverpool academy graduate Harvey Elliot has maneuvered himself into the starting XI in the early doors of the current campaign, and if Thiago has had his status in the first-team reduced, a switch to Milan may not seem entirely drastic despite no links with the player wanting to leave Anfield.
