Liverpool demolish Manchester United

Manchester United were provided with a severe lesson in just where they stand in English football at present as a rampant Liverpool put five past David De Gea at Old Trafford.

Naby Keita opened the scoring, before Diogo Jota added a second before a quarter of an hour was played. Mohamed Salah added two more before half time, and completed his hat-trick just after, before Manchester United were reduced to ten men on the hour.

In truth, Liverpool opted for mercy after that, and could have scored several more had they continued attacking with the same verve. However, they took their foot off the throat of their opponents, perhaps more damning of the divide between the clubs than anything else could be.

The only two blemishes on the day for Jurgen Klopp’s side were a pair of injuries to midfielders. In the first half, James Milner was forced off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury, and was replaced by Curtis Jones.

Then, just before the hour, a high challenge for which Paul Pogba saw red for also saw Naby Keita leave the pitch on a stretcher, with fears about the length of injury evident on the Liverpool bench.

Update provided on quartet of midfielders

Also absent from the side that travelled to Old Trafford were Liverpool pair Thiago and Fabinho, with neither with the squad. However, ahead of their Carabao Cup tie with Preston North End, the Reds have provided an update on all four players.

Sadly for Liverpool, it seems that they will be without James Milner for the foreseeable future, with the England man having picked up a hamstring strain which will see him miss the next few games.

Equally, Thiago is not available for either Preston nor Brighton, although he could well be back after that. There is better news on Keita, with the injury proving to be “just a bruise”.

Additionally, Fabinho’s injury was not specified but he was not ruled out by the club, which will come as a massive boost to Reds fans.
