Liverpool handed boost as 5 Atletico Madrid players ruled out of Anfield clash

Liverpool host Atletico Madrid

In matchday four of the Champions League group stages, Liverpool play host to Atletico Madrid, with the pair having fought it out in Spain just two weeks ago.

Jurgen Klopp’s side emerged narrowly victorious in that encounter, courtesy of a 3-2 scoreline, which has since seen them take control of the group.

Should they pick up another three points, they will secure their qualification to the knockout rounds with 2 games to spare, and will have made a mockery of a tricky seeming group.

Only 16 senior players travelling

And now, if reports in Spanish press are true, Liverpool are set to be handed a massive advantage for their home tie with five Atletico Madrid players out of action, leaving Simeone short on playing staff.

Antoine Greizmann, of course, is suspended following his red card at the Wanda Metropolitano in the reverse fixture. However, as per Spanish outlet AS, he will be joined by four others in missing the clash with Klopp’s side. Savic, meanwhile, remains suspended from last season, so cannot feature either.

However, there are also three injury concerns for Diego Simeone’s side: Both Geoffrey Kondogbia and Thomas Lemar, who started the reverse game, are sidelined after being substituted during that defeat, while Marcos Llorente is also injured, leaving Simeone down to the bare bones of his squad.

Will they be able to scrape a precious draw that will leave them alive and kicking in the group, or will they hand the initiative to the Merseyside outfit with these absentees?
