Liverpool dealt shock loss

Liverpool faced off with West Ham United this past Sunday, falling to a rather shocking 3-1 defeat at the hands of David Moyes’ men.

Said loss was actually Liverpool’s first of the season in all competitions, yet it moved the Merseysiders down to 4th in the Premier League table and just two points above Arsenal.

This is because, before this past weekend, Liverpool had drawn four of their 10 league ties.

Four draws from 10, now 11, games was not exactly what you expect from a title-challenging side, with Jurgen Klopp and co. no doubt miffed at the fact they dropped points to Brentford and Brighton especially.

Now, former Chelsea player Tony Cascarino has been discussing Liverpool’s weakness, which he has pinpointed as a lack of intensity in midfield:

“The key reason why they are not as strong as they have been is that the midfield ‘dogs of war’ are more like dogs of straw at the moment.

“The three playing in there used to be so relentless and aggressive that they made it really hard for opponents to get at Liverpool. Now the centre halves are exposed. The big miss is Gini Wijnaldum, who left a big hole when he went to Paris Saint-Germain.”

As Cascarino points out, Liverpool are severally missing Georginio Wijnaldum, and with Harvey Elliot injured, Klopp has had to call upon Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Thiago of late to fill that third spot in midfield.

However, Cascarino insists that the pair do not do the same job, especially in the big games, before adding that this is the reason he thinks Liverpool will struggle to win the league:

“Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Thiago Alcantara do not do the same job, especially against big physical opposition such as Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek in the West Ham midfield. Fabinho can do the job but he didn’t look fit to me.

“It’s the reason why I think Liverpool will struggle to win the league, although what we’ve seen in the last week — Manchester City losing to Crystal Palace, Burnley holding Chelsea, and now West Ham beating Liverpool — tells me the winning points total will be less than 90 this season, unlike some recent seasons.”
