Liverpool dealt another injury blow as Harvey Ellliot withdraws from international duty

Elliot withdraws from Young Lions

Liverpool have been dealt further injury news as promising star Harvey Elliot has withdrawn from the England U-21 squad after reporting for duty. He, along with Tottenham’s Ryan Sessegnon, will be unavailable for the game against Kosovo on Tuesday.

As per an official statement:

Liverpool player Elliott reported for international duty with an injury sustained during his side’s recent draw against Chelsea. Following further assessment, it has been decided that the 18 year old is unlikely to play any part in the game in Milton Keynes so has returned to his club.

Elliot enjoyed a fine season on loan at Blackburn Rovers last time out, and has started the season well for the Reds, appearing in all three of their Premier League fixtures, including two starts. He has operated more in central midfield than the wide berth that he took up at Ewood Park.

Liverpool options thin on the ground

Elliot’s injury, which surely leaves him a doubt for the upcoming league fixture against Leeds United and perhaps the Champions League tie against AC Milan, will come as a massive blow to Jurgen Klopp.

Takumi Minamino withdrew from Japan’s international duty two days ago with injury, while Roberto Firmino is also sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Klopp’s side sold Xherdan Shaqiri to Lyon in the summer, leaving their forward options at present thin on the ground, something that Elliot’s injury doesn’t help.

With the season not even a month old, and Mohammed Salah and Sadio Mane both set to leave for the Africa Cup of Nations midway through, will they come to regret not signing an additional forward?
