Lionel Messi sets new international record, just days after Cristiano Ronaldo does the same

Messi makes international history

Argentine and now PSG superstar Lionel Messi has once again made history during his national team’s clash with Uruguay. Lionel Scaloni’s side ultimately ran out 3-0 winners, thanks to goals fro Rodrigo de Paul and Lautaro Martinez, but it was the little magician Messi that opened the scoring for his side.

With his first half goal, the former Barcelona legend has now hit 80 goals for the Albiceste. This makes him the first South American player to reach 80 goals in history, with Pele having previously been the record holder with 77 goals for Brazil.

Having made 155 appearances for his country with his latest outing, Messi could well be on his way to rack up even more goals in the coming years, and could soon become a part of the illustrious 100 club, a record which only two players currently hold.

Ronaldo-Messi rivalry goes international

One of those, of course, is his major rival Cristiano Ronaldo. The pair have been locked in combat for over a decade, winning 11 of the last 12 ballon d’ors. And as such, it seemed completely logical that Ronaldo continued to break records for Portugal simultaneously with Messi for Argentina.

The Portuguese, in the International break after breaking the record for highest scoring men’s international, CR7 then netted against Qatar to create another record, becoming the player to score against the most individual nations.
