Lionel Messi reportedly on the verge of Barcelona exit as contract talks break down

Messi’s contract conundrum

Lionel Messi, arguably the best player in the world, has been a free agent since July 1st, when his contract at Barcelona expired.

The Argentine, who has won seven ballon d’ors during his time in Catalunya, helped Argentina to Copa America glory this summer, and was expected to come back and put pen to paper on a new deal on a reduced salary.

Two weeks ago, club president Joan Laporta told fans that:

“We want him to stay and Leo wants to stay, it is all going well. We still have to deal with the issue of financial fair play. We are in the process of finding the best solution for both parties.”

Then, last Friday, he reiterated his stance, saying that:

“Everything is going well as planned. Everything is progressing properly, everything is going well.”

As a result, everything pointed towards a new deal being agreed for the superstar.

MARCA report contract breakdown

However, disturbing reports are beginning to come out of Spain suggesting that talks have since broken down between Barcelona and Messi, with Marca suggesting that renewal is now “almost impossible”.

The news, if true, would come as a huge blow to Barcelona, who have centred much of their transfer window on the premise of Messi remaining in the side. It does also beg the question, where could Messi possibly go if not Barcelona, with Paris Saint Germain the immediate logical choice.

Could we see Messi, Mbappe and Neymar in Ligue 1 next season?
