Lingard future in doubt after rejecting Man United citing concerns over lack of minutes

Jesse Lingard has doused fresh speculation over his future at Manchester United today after the England international midfielder has reportedly rejected new terms from the Red Devils.

As reported by Times Sport’s Paul Hirst, Lingard has already moved through the opening stages of the 2021-22 Premier League campaign with the feeling that he will not receive the amount of first-team minutes that he deems acceptable.

Lingard, now 28 and in the prime portion of his career, is prepared to let his deal expire as to seek a move away from the club on a free transfer if boss Ole Gunnar Solskjær and the club brass cannot offer him guarantees as to his status in first-team plans at Old Trafford moving forward.

United have started the season in decent shape after securing seven points from a possible nine in their opening fixtures and sit joint-second in the table, but Lingard had little say thus far for the Red Devils, featuring for just four minutes in one substitute appearance.

Despite the little time he has been given early doors on the domestic front, Lingard has remained on form for England after coming back into the fold last season. He bagged a brace and added an assist in the Three Lions’ recent 4-0 win against Andorra in World Cup qualifying, showing a level of performance for the national team that many would love to have at club level.

West Ham return unlikely after Lingard shot down the opportunity

Hindsight is indeed 20-20, and Jesse Lingard could well be shooting himself in the foot after he seemingly remains on the outside looking in at Manchester United after the club acquired both Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo to bolster their already formidable attacking options.

The attacking depth now afforded to Ole Gunnar Solskjær allowed the club to recoup a portion of the money spent during the window when they sold Dan James to Leeds United, but that still leaves Lingard with Bruno Fernandes, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, and Anthony Martial as direct competitors for minutes on the pitch.

Rejecting the chance to return to West Ham this summer after a brilliant loan spell in the second half of last season now seems to have been an unwise choice by Lingard.

That decision has potentially been compounded by the Hammers bringing in Croatian international attacking midfielder Nikola Vlašić from CSKA Moscow, with the former Guardian NextGen player looking to set the record straight after a poor spell at Everton back in 2017-18.

Should Lingard run his deal down or look to move in January once again, the perfect fit that was David Moyes’ outfit now may be off the table and the Warrington-native may have to test new waters once again in a bid to establish himself.
