Lenovo confirms it will no longer make Legion gaming phones

Thinking of buying a new gaming phone? There is now one less company to choose from.

In a statement to Android Authority, Lenovo confirmed that it no longer manufactures Legion gaming phones. The company discontinued the line, with a spokesperson describing it as “part of a broader business transformation and game portfolio consolidation.”

But Lenovo goes on to say it’s “committed to advancing the gaming category across form factors,” suggesting that other Legion products won’t be affected. Legion is one of the most recognizable brands among gaming laptops, desktops, and other accessories, and there’s no indication it’s suffering a similar fate.

The move means August’s Legion Y70 was the last phone in the series, although none of the recent handsets were made outside of China. Just two years ago, the Legion Phone Duel 2 arrived in Europe as one of the most talked about gaming phones thanks to a new design featuring dual batteries and a landscape pop-up selfie camera.

The original 2020 Duel was the first gaming phone Lenovo ever made. After a total of seven handsets in just three years, the company has decided to call it quits.

Moreover, it may not be the only brand of gaming phones to be released in 2023. According to China Star Market, financial problems at Xiaomi’s Black Shark sub-brand have led to the layoff of around half of its employees in October. A translation of Digital Chat Station’s leaked February Weibo post hints that a follow-up to the Black Shark 5 Pro may never see the light of day.

These measures come at a difficult time for the phone industry as a whole. Just this week it was rumored that Chinese phone giant Oppo and its subsidiary OnePlus were set to pull out of major European markets, including the UK, although both companies denied the report in official statements to Tech. Since early Razer pioneers have already stopped making gaming phones, what are your alternatives? Two brands – Nubia’s Red Magic and Asus’ ROG Phone – are the main players, although Vivo’s iQoo and even Poco have recently come up with useful alternatives.

With the still relatively new Red Magic 8 Pro and ROG Phone 7 on the horizon, dedicated gaming handsets still seem to have a future, even with Lenovo’s Legion out of sight.
