Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers provides update on Jamie Vardy’s condition ahead of 2021/22 season

Vardy continues to shine

Jamie Vardy has of course been a key figure at Leicester City for many years now.

The forward was crucial to their shock Premier League title win and has been their top-scorer in every campaign since.

In 2020/21 Vardy would score 15 and assist nine in 34 league outings for the Foxes.

That is a solid record for any striker operating in the top tier of English football, but it is made more impressive when you realise Vardy is of course 34 years of age.

Rodgers on Vardy

With Vardy now in the twilight years of his career, Leicester will no doubt instead be looking to the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, who had a superb end to 2020/21, to take up some of the pressure this coming campaign.

Vardy, though, whilst getting on in years, does seem to be still in impressive shape.

Speaking in a recent interview, Brendan Rodgers was drawn on Jamie Vardy and his fitness at present, with the Northern Irishman going on to state that Vardy is in great condition:

“There’s individual programmes for every player and Jamie’s, of course, will be different from someone who is 17 or 18 but in pre-season he’s been first-class.

“He’s been at the front in some of the running we’ve done in pre-season and when you see his body you can see he’s in great condition.”

Rodgers also spoke on the competition for places at the head of Leicester’s attack following the arrival of Patson Daka over the summer:

“Sometimes competition is the best coach. You can coach players to do certain things but sometimes the best coaches are the players themselves.

“Jamie’s a very unselfish player so he will look on [Daka] as someone to come in and support if the squad and team are to achieve what we want to achieve this season. Bringing in someone of that quality will certainly help Jamie but ultimately it will help the squad.”
