Leeds fans set attendance record as Man City seal Premier League 2 title at Elland Road

The Premier League 2 showdown between Leeds United and Manchester City on Friday evening has given rise to a number of noteworthy talking points.

First off, the latter, owing to yet another three-point haul, have capped off a stellar campaign, have officially been crowned as champions for the 2nd year running.

Having opened up a nine-point advantage over 2nd-placed West Ham with just two games to play, Brian Barry-Murphy’s troops cannot be caught, as the up-and-coming crop of talent on the blue half of Manchester continues to prove itself as some of English football’s very best.

Leeds, on the other hand, could yet be relegated from the Premier League 2.

Their defeat on Friday means that the Whites remain third from bottom in the division, whilst having played two games more than Chelsea below them.

Amid an otherwise disappointing evening’s work for Andrew Taylor’s side, though, Leeds’ loyal supporters nevertheless managed to make history.

This came as a crowd of 21,321 packed Elland Road, marking the highest-ever attendance for a Premier League 2 fixture.

Palmer amongst the goals

Turning attentions towards the action in Yorkshire itself, it was actually Leeds who opened the evening’s scoring, when a sustained spell of pressure culminated in Mateo Joseph rifling home at the near post:

Within five minutes, though, City had turned the clash on its head, courtesy of strikes on the part of highly-regarded Kayky and Cole Palmer.

Leeds, to their credit, continued to push for an equaliser as the clash wore on, and were probably deserving of one before the evening’s visitors put the result beyond doubt with a full 89 minutes on the clock, through Liam Delap.
