Kylian Mbappe on Man United’s list of potential targets as club eye ‘big-name forward’ next summer
Man United’s strikers
Manchester United’s striker situation is an interesting one at present.
Anthony Martial would spend a good chunk of 2020/21 being used as the Red Devils’ main no.9.
However, his goal-scoring return before his season-ending injury was nowhere near good enough for a side who has Premier League title ambitions.
The Frenchman netted just four goals in 22 league outings last term.
United’s striking woes were solved somewhat at the end of 2020/21 when Edinson Cavani found form and fitness to finish the seaosn with 17 goals in 39 outings across all competitions.
And Cavani has since signed on at Old Trafford for the 2021/22 campaign as well.
Man United targeting big-name forward
However, whilst Man United are largely covered at centre-forward for this campaign, they do have something of an issue next summer when an ageing Cavani’s contract expires.
This would, at present, leave just Martial and Mason Greenwood as recognised centre-forwards.
And though Greenwood is a serious talent and should have a very bright future ahead of him, it is asking a lot for him to be United’s main no.9 so soon. Also, as already discussed, Martial has proven he is not good enough to be the main striker at a club like United who should be challenging in the PL and Champions League.
So, the solution does seem obvious – dip into the transfer market next summer to sign a forward once Cavani leaves.
And, according to a report from ESPN, that is seemingly the plan on the red half of Manchester.
They report that United are building for the future, and plan to sign a centre-forward in the 2022 summer window.
Solskjaer and the United recruitment team are drawing up a list of options, with PSG’s Kylian Mbappe, who is out of contract next summer, named as a potential target:
