KGF: Chapter 2 is the best-selling and most-watched film of 2022, according to BookMyShow
KGF: Chapter 2 – Prashanth Neel’s sequel to the period thriller – was among the best-selling and most-watched films of 2022. According to BookMyShow’s “Best of 2022” report, release day – April 14 – the film managed to sell 2.14 million tickets, with more collections to come the following weekends. The Kannada-language film sold 34% of total tickets over the weekends of 2022, overtaking SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, to become the best-selling film on the platform, with 17.7 million tickets sold.
According to BookMyShow, KGF: Chapter 2 also topped the charts for the most advance bookings, followed by RRR, Ponniyin Selvan: I, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and oddly enough, Idris Elba-led Beast. – not the Tamil language film of the same name, starring Vijay.
BookMyShow stats also mention a 116% increase in audiences wanting an “immersive cinematic experience” on regular screens. This naturally refers to the 3D, IMAX 2D, IMAX 3D and 4DX formats, which were also heavily promoted during the September re-release of Avatar. The IMAX and 4DX formats are mostly popular with Hollywood films, with Indian titles making up a small percentage of the total.
Based on data collected from the period of January 1 to December 5, BookMyShow Stream – the company’s video-on-demand platform – recorded 1.11 lakh viewing hours in 2022. The year also saw 200 movies added to the streaming platform which 93% of Indian audiences devoured. The remaining seven percent, however, chose to purchase these films to watch at their leisure. While there are no explicit numbers, the company notes that Spider-Man: No Way Home, The Spacewalker, and the 2020 documentary centered around the assassination of Kim Jong-nam, Assassins, were the films ” Most Watched” on BMS Stream. The Marvel Cinematic Universe entry in the list also has an extended version for streaming or purchase, which includes content that was cut from the theatrical version.
2022 also hosted some Oscar-nominated films on BookMyShow Stream, with King Richard directed by Will Smith, Dune by Denis Villeneuve, Kristen Stewart spencerand Parallel Mothers with Penélope Cruz among the highlights.
The BookMyShow report also mentions that 8 million spectators came out for live entertainment on the pitch, across more than 19,000 events – a positive development, after enduring COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020 and 2021.
