Jurgen Klopp provides van Dijk & Keita updates ahead of Leeds

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has, on Thursday, provided a fitness update on his squad.

Leeds lie in wait

The Reds are of course set to return to action this weekend, in their first outing on the back of the international break.

Klopp and co. have enjoyed a solid start to the new campaign, racking up seven points from an available nine in the Premier League.

After getting the better of both Norwich and Burnley in comfortable fashion, Liverpool’s final outing ahead of the break saw them play out a 1-1 stalemate with Chelsea two weeks ago.

Such efforts, in turn, see the Merseysiders sitting in joint-2nd in the Premier League table.

Next up in their quest to return to the division’s summit, meanwhile, comes a highly-anticipated meeting with Leeds United this weekend.

VVD boost

And, as outlined above, ahead of his side’s clash with the Whites, set to play out at Elland Road on Sunday evening, Jurgen Klopp has today provided a fitness update on his squad.

The key update came in the form of the latest on the wellbeing of star defender Virgil van Dijk.

Dutch international van Dijk, fresh off the back of a lengthy spell on the sidelines, was spotted limping from the pitch upon the conclusion of his country’s meeting with Turkey on Tuesday night.

Concern, in turn, quickly spread that VVD could be set for another stretch out of action.

In a boost for all associated with Liverpool, though, on Thursday, Klopp has confirmed that his defensive stalwart is ‘fine’:

‘With Virgil, that was obviously a scary moment, you can imagine. I sent him a message after the game, ‘Are you alright?’ ‘Yes.’ ‘100 per cent?’ ‘200 per cent.’ ‘Come on, send me a video of you without limping…’ ‘I’m only limping off.’

‘So he called me from the bus and said, ‘Boss, I’m fine!’ I said, ‘Why are you limping then?’ He said, ‘My wife asked the same!’ So, yeah, that was a bit of a tricky moment but apart from that, no, all fine [for the other international players].’

Naby Keita & Andre Gomes

Naby Keita, meanwhile, is too available for selection, despite an alarming series of developments which saw the midfielder’s scheduled meeting with Morocco earlier this week cancelled, amid a military coup in his home country of Guinea:

‘Naby is fine. Yesterday he was not here [at the AXA Training Centre] but he was in Liverpool again. I will have a chat with him today, but from what I know from all the calls and talks we had, he’s fine.’

Fellow midfielder Harvey Elliott is too said to be ‘fine again’.

The news regarding striker Roberto Firmino was less encouraging, however, with the Brazilian still on the treatment table after picking up a fitness problem versus Chelsea last time out:

‘Bobby is not [fit], it happened in the game [against Chelsea] obviously.’
