On Tuesday evening, the news that Newcastle’s loan move for Jesse Lingard was on the verge of collapse, despite the player seemingly being keen on a move away from Old Trafford, where game time has been extremely limited this season.

As per David Ornstein, Manchester United were ‘asking for a sizeable loan fee’ to make the deal work, having already turned down pursuits from Tottenham and West Ham due to the fact that the pair are current rivals for the top four spots in the Premier League.
But just how sizeable was the fee demanded?
Well, as per the Guardian, the Red Devils were demanding an initial loan fee of £2.5 million, with the wages being fully covered by the Magpies. Then, the kicker came.
Should Eddie Howe and co. survive, Manchester United were demanding an additional 12 million pounds for a man who, ironically, would not be a Manchester United player by that point with his current contract expiring in June.
This has, per the report, left Lingard feeling “let down and disrespected by Manchester United”, with the Englishman being denied moves by greed or factors outside of his control.

Worse still, there is little hope of a move away now. ‘Unless a compromise is reached Lingard faces having to finish the campaign at Old Trafford even though Ralf Rangnick has told him he is not in his plans’, report the Guardian.
This could yet have major implications for any last hopes that Lingard had of making the England World Cup squad for the tournament in November.
Three the unlucky number for Lingard
Lingard has already seen teammate Anthony Martial granted a loan move away to Sevilla, while Donny Van De Beek is on the verge of completing his own temporary departure according to reports.

Lingard could well prove to be the black sheep not allowed to depart, with United keen to keep some reserve players in case of COVID-19 issues later in the year.
