iPhone with under-display Face ID delayed to 2025 or later, Touch ID to return, analyst says

Apple has been speculated to bring under-display Face ID to iPhone 15 models this year. Now DSCC analyst Ross Young is contradicting the rumor that Apple has delayed plans to under-display Face ID for at least a year. This suggests that Apple’s iPhone 17 models in 2025 could feature under-display Face ID. The Cupertino-based tech giant is also expected to bring back Touch ID functionality that lets users unlock their phones with a fingerprint on iPhone units. The Touch ID system would be designed to be placed under the screen.

Ross Young on Twitter said that Apple’s plans to bring iPhone models with under-display Face ID will be pushed back at least a year to 2025 or later due to sensor issues. Based on this, it is expected that the iPhone 17 series will come with the supposed feature. Under-display Face ID will hide the lens used for face recognition when not in use and it will look like a normal display. An early rumor from The Elec said that Apple may be bringing under-display Face ID to the iPhone 16 Pro.

Separately, a new post from South Korean Naver blog suggests that Apple will adopt an under-display Touch ID for future iPhone models. The company is said to have made “some progress” in the recent development of Touch ID integrated under the screen.

The tech giant is expected to add Touch ID under the display two to three years after it completes the adoption of Face ID under the display. The report adds that the system combines optical and shortwave infrared systems and Apple has been awarded 12 patents.

Apart from basic fingerprint recognition, the solution should identify the vein pattern of the user. It could also measure the user’s blood oxygen saturation and pulse rate. The feature could ensure a fast situational recognition rate by determining whether the user is wearing gloves and whether the user’s fingers are wet or dry.
