iPhone charger supplier Salcomp to double its workforce in India to 25,000 over the next 2-3 years

Finland’s Salcomp, a supplier to US technology group Apple, plans to more than double its workforce in India to almost 25,000 over the next 2-3 years, a company executive said on Monday.

Salcomp, one of Apple’s main charger suppliers for its iPhone models, is also building a large housing complex with entertainment and education for about 15,000 people, the executive added.

A tax official told Reuters earlier this month that India plans to manufacture more mobile phones this year after the government scrapped import duties on some components used to assemble high-end phones. global companies such as Apple.

The move comes as Apple aims to increase its share of phones produced in India to 25%. India’s apple exports hit $1 billion (about Rs 8,190 crore) in December.

Last month, the Indian unit of Apple supplier Jabil Inc reportedly started manufacturing components for AirPods in the country and shipping plastic bodies or cases for AirPods to China and Vietnam.

The Cupertino, Calif.-based company has been betting big on India since it started assembling iPhone models in the country in 2017 via Wistron and then Foxconn, in line with the Indian government’s drive to manufacture locally.

Foxconn plans to quadruple the workforce at its iPhone plant in India over two years, sources told Reuters late last year.

Apple wants India to account for up to 25% of its production, up from around 5% to 7% currently, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said at a conference last month, while as the iPhone maker continues to shift its manufacturing out of China.
