iPhone 16 Pro may get under-display Face ID, all iPhone 15 models may get Dynamic Island: report

Apple launched its iPhone 14 series with four models in September last year. The Cupertino giant hasn’t confirmed anything about the new iPhone 15 series yet, but the rumors about the 2024 iPhone models, believed to be the iPhone 16 series, have already started coming in. A new report suggests that Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro will feature a -Display Face ID. The lens used for face recognition will not be visible when not in use. Only the front camera lens cutout will be visible. Additionally, all iPhone 15 models are expected to come with a Dynamic Island feature which is currently only available on iPhone 14 Pro models.

According to a report by The Elec (in Korean), Apple may be bringing under-display Face ID to the iPhone 16 Pro. The biometric security used to unlock the device securely would look like a normal display when not in use. With this, when the screen is on, only the front camera lens cutout will be visible. Also, the sense of immersion could be improved.

After implementing under-display ‌Face ID‌ technology, Apple will adopt an under-panel camera (UPC), the report says. This is said to eliminate the display cutouts currently present on the ‌iPhone‌.

Apple had previously speculated about integrating under-display Face ID technology with the iPhone 15 Pro models. The report also adds that the company will make the Dynamic Island feature available on all iPhone 15 models as the under-display technology is not ready yet. Last year, the feature was limited to Pro models in the iPhone 14 series.

Elec’s report is in line with speculation from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and supply chain analyst Ross Young. Kuo suggested last year that under-display Face ID would first come to Apple in 2024 with an under-display front camera. Ross Young tweeted earlier that the iPhone 16 Pro might feature under-display Face ID. He also claimed that Apple will make Dynamic Island available on iPhone 15 models. Ross said that Apple’s 120Hz ProMotion displays will be limited to Pro models.
