In the latest version of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says that Apple originally planned to work on iOS 17, he intended to call it a “tuning release”, emphasizing on fixing bugs and improving performance, rather than adding a host of new features. This was partly due to the hiccups the Cupertino, Calif.-based iPhone maker faced with the iOS 16 update which added a number of new features but was plagued with missed deadlines and to a bug-ridden boot that required many updates to process and fix.

Gurman states in his newsletter that Apple has decided to change its strategy during the development process of the next version of iOS 17. The update, which is codenamed Dawn, could include several features requested by many Apple customers.

The next software update is expected to be showcased at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2023 in June. New features expected on Apple’s latest operating system include a next-generation CarPlay experience that supports deeper integration with vehicle functions such as climate control and FM radio. Apple’s digital voice assistant, Siri, is also expected to ditch the “Hey Siri” trigger phrase in favor of “Siri.”

Apple may also allow users to install and use alternative app stores, which the iPhone maker has insisted on not allowing until now. Sideloading has been an advantage that Android users cite as having an advantage over Apple’s operating ecosystem. iOS 17 is also expected to support Apple’s AR/VR headset, which is currently in development and may be demonstrated by the company in the coming months.
