Insight into Chelsea’s summer business as Blues look to address squad imbalance

Chelsea’s bloated squad

Insight into Chelsea’s plans for the rest of the summer transfer window has today been forthcoming.

Thomas Tuchel has previously lamented the number of players currently at the club, noting after the friendly win over Arsenal that “we have 42 players in the building”, a number that has since increased with the addition of Romelu Lukaku.

As 101 observed earlier in the window, Chelsea are one of several teams (including Arsenal, Barcelona and Tottenham) currently unable to shift their unwanted players due to a lack of money in the European market, with revenue streams having been decimated as a consequence of the pandemic.

The result of this is that business has been slow in shipping players out of the door, but Chelsea are finally seeming to make some headway in this regard.

Three out, more to follow?

The Blues have managed to confirm three loan exits in the past 24 hours. Michy Batshuayi has joined Turkish outfit Besiktas, Brazilian winger Kenedy has joined Flamengo (where he will link up with Manchester United’s Andreas Pereira).

Finally, it seems as though Emerson is set to join Lyon for the upcoming season.

In addition to these, Fabrizio Romano shed some light on the the current deals, reporting that Tiemoue Bakayoko is in talks with AC Milan and that Fiorentina and Atalanta are set to battle it out for Davide Zappacosta. It is not clear whether these deals would be loans or permanent options.

For Chelsea fans, they will be hoping that movement can be seen on the likes of Ross Barkley, Danny Drinkwater and Charly Musonda, all of whom were out on loan last campaign.

On the incomings front, they remain interested in Sevilla defender Jules Kounde, while a central midfielder seems necessary but no movement has been reported.

With two weeks left of the window, plenty could still change at Stamford Bridge.
