Incredible scenes in South America as Brazilian health authorities take to pitch mid-game to force Lo Celso, Martinez and Argentine stars off

An absolutely surreal scene is currently unfolding during the meeting between Brazil and Argentina on Sunday night.

Sao Paulo showdown

South American football’s two leading powerhouses have locked horns for the latest occasion this evening.

The clash comes amid the respective nations’ 2022 World Cup qualifying campaigns, with hosts Brazil, ahead of kick-off, having sat top of the table, six points clear of Argentina in 2nd.

In turn, the Albiceleste, who got the better of their bitter rivals in the finale of the Copa America just months ago, no doubt headed into proceedings with their sights firmly set on all three points.

The hard-fought nature of the opening exchanges therefore came as little surprise, with no fewer than four heavy fouls having been committed inside the first five minutes.

Covid-based chaos

Few, if any, however, could have predicted what was set to come next.

Amid absolutely baffling scenes, a fracas between a number of indistinguishable individuals on the touchline eventually made its way onto the pitch.

Players from both sides, in turn, quickly made their way into the thick of the drama, in an effort to establish exactly what was beginning to unfold.

And it soon became clear that those to have interrupted the action were members of the Brazilian national health authority.

This comes after attempts were made shortly before kick-off to force a quartet of Argentine stars – in the form of Emiliano Martinez, Emiliano Buendia, Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso – out of proceedings.

After word was forthcoming that the Premier League quartet had provided false information regarding having spent time in the United Kingdom – a nation on Brazil’s red list – upon their entry into the country this weekend, all four were ordered to leave with immediate effect:

An agreement, however, was later found between authorities of all of FIFA, CONMEBOL and the Brazilian government, to ensure that the Argentine stars in question would in fact be permitted to participate:

But, inside the opening ten minutes at the Corinthians Arena, this decision was evidently reversed.

In turn, in scenes straight out of a soap opera, a host of health authorities managed to make their way onto the pitch, halting the clash in its tracks.

The move saw Argentina’s stars, along with the team of officials in attendance, make their way from the field of play, leaving Tite’s Brazil squad standing around looking understandably baffled:

The fixture is therefore currently at a standstill, with little sign of getting back underway any time soon.
