IMDb launches weekly ‘Popular Indian Celebrities’ ranking, available in app

IMDb has launched a new feature called “Popular Indian Celebrities”, which compiles and ranks the cast and crew of Indian original movies and OTT content based on their popularity. The feature, which is exclusive to the IMDb app (available for iOS and Android) as of now, offers weekly charts that are updated every Monday. The rankings are based on data collected from site visits and user traffic, providing insight into popular celebrities based on recent movie and OTT content launches.

The feature film itself is an indicator of shows and movies that might be of interest to Indian audiences and focuses on stars, key crew members and top movie executives who are making the news for various reasons. The inaugural list of popular Indian celebrities for the week of February 20 was dominated by actor Raashii Khanna, who starred in Farzi, which recently released on Prime Video. Various other Farzi cast members, including lead actors Shahid Kapoor and Vijay Sethupathi, also made the week’s top 20 list.

List updates will be made weekly on Mondays and are determined by site and app visits by users themselves. IMDb claims over 200 million monthly visitors to its platform globally and also uses this data to maintain other rankings including Popular Indian Movies and Popular Indian Shows. Other key entries on the inaugural list include Shah Rukh Khan, whose film Pathaan continues its strong run at the box office after its theatrical release on January 25.

IMDb was created as a fan-run database of movies in 1990, but has been owned and operated by Amazon since 1998. The platform is one of the world’s leading repositories of movie information and maintains a Powerful rating system based on user ratings for movies and shows worldwide.
