‘I want to beat Chelsea’: West Ham’s Kurt Zouma speaks out ahead of reunion with former club

West Ham defender Kurt Zouma has spoken out on facing his former club for the first time.

Kurt Zouma joins West Ham

Chelsea would sign Zouma in 2011 from French outlet St-Etienne.

Just a teenager at the time, Zouma would be loaned out on several occasions to gain some much-needed senior experience.

Zouma would eventually return to the club in 2019 following a loan stint with Everton and would finally begin to earn a regular starting spot under Frank Lampard.

However, when Lampard was sacked in January of 2020, Zouma saw his game time reduced a fair but under Thomas Tuchel.

As a result, with Chelsea having a surplus of centre-backs, it was not too surprising to see Zouma sold to West Ham for a reported £31.5m.

Zouma has since featured on 11 occasions for the Hammers, becoming a key cog in their backline and a big reason why they have been able to reach the knockout rounds of the Europa League and spend large parts of this season in the Premier League top-four.

Now though, West Ham are set to host Chelsea, Zouma’s former club, on Saturday.

Ahead of the game, Zouma has spoken out about facing the Blues for the first time since his move:

“It will feel special in a way because I’ve been there for so many years, but it’s a football game and like all the other games I want to win this game for my team.

“I want to beat Chelsea because I want to beat everybody. I play for West Ham now and I’m very happy to be here.

“It’s going to be a tough game as we know they have a lot of strength, but we have to use our strength to make them suffer.”
