Huawei Watch Ultimate is a luxury smartwatch for scuba diving

Huawei is betting on luxury with its latest smartwatch, the Huawei Watch Ultimate. This smartwatch is inspired by classic diving watches such as Breitling, Rolex or TAG Heuer, and offers up to 14 days of autonomy, a multitude of health tracking functions and the ability to survive in the ocean at depths of up to 100 meters.

Pricing isn’t official yet, but with such great specs and materials, including titanium, don’t expect it to be cheap. It should go on sale in the UK and Europe in early April, so we’ll likely hear more in the coming days. A US launch is not planned.

Aesthetically, the watch is designed to mimic technical dive watches, although there are various features specifically for scuba or free divers. It’s water resistant to 100 meters – or 10 ATM, ISO 22810 or EN 13319, if you meet your technical pressure standards. It has physical buttons to help navigate underwater and various software functions for things like dive depth, timing and dive logs.

There are two versions: Voyage Blue, with a blue face and a titanium bracelet; and Expedition Black, with a black front ring and a rubber strap that Huawei promises are particularly water and oil resistant, so it’s probably the best option for diving and other sports. I think it will also be cheaper than the titanium version.

Other key features include a 1.5-inch display, 2.35mm sapphire crystal coating for added durability, corrosion-resistant liquid metal body, and health tracking including health monitoring. SpO2, stress, sleep and ECG. Add in up to 14 days of battery life and the ability to charge from zero to full in 60 minutes, and the new watch seems to be working hard to earn its Ultimate name.

With purse strings tightened around the world, it’s undoubtedly risky to launch what will likely be an expensive luxury smartwatch, but those of you into diving and other sea sports just might find that it is worth it.
