High-speed train ticket office: Brad Pitt’s film reaches $62.5 million worldwide

Bullet Train collected $62.5 million (about Rs. 497 crore) at the worldwide box office during its opening weekend. Of that amount, $32.4 million (about Rs. 257 crore) was taken from 57 overseas markets, including India, which saw an early release on August 4, courtesy of Sony Pictures. Meanwhile, Jurassic World Dominion has overtaken Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, becoming the second-biggest global producer of 2022. The top spot is still held by Top Gun: Maverick, with a whopping 1.35 billion dollars (about Rs. 10,743 crore) worldwide.

According to Deadline, the Brad Pitt star has seen the biggest international opening (minus the US and Canada) for a non-franchise film since Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, which was released amid the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Even with scathing reviews, Bullet Train fared quite well with audiences, who expected nothing less than a fun summer action flick.

On a regional basis, the film’s overseas market was led by the UK with a start of $3.5 million (approximately Rs. 27 crore), followed by France at $3.1 million (approximately Rs. 24 crore) and Mexico barely at $3 million (about Rs. 23 crore). The versions from the United Arab Emirates and Taiwan added $1.3 million (about Rs. 10 crore) each, while Germany and Spain raised the bar slightly, with $1.5 million (about 11.9 crore rupees) and $1.4 million (about 11.3 crore rupees) respectively. Deadline notes that IMAX collections amount to $4.1 million (approximately Rs 32 crore) and the record $32.4 million overseas does not include some markets. Bullet Train is due out in South Korea on August 24, Italy on August 25, and Japan on September 1 – odd considering the film is based in Tokyo. Moreover, India is nowhere on the list.

The latest entry in the rebooted Jurassic World trilogy, Dominion, sits in second place on the global box office chart with $960 million (roughly Rs. 7,636 crore), although the numbers are helped by the China release. The Tom Cruise-directed combat action movie Top Gun: Maverick, however, managed to hold on to the top position, failing a Chinese release, topping $1.35 billion. Even Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder – which surpassed the $500 million mark last month – has collected an impressive $700 million (roughly Rs. 5,567 crore), without China.

Additionally, Illumination’s Minions: The Rise of Gru grossed $15.9 million (roughly Rs. 126 crore) over the weekend. The worldwide total now stands at $757.9 million (about Rs. 6,028 crore). Additionally, Warner Bros.’ DC League of Super-Pets, released on August 5 in India, is now at a worldwide total of $83.4 million (about Rs. 663 crore).
